Duda Lucena is a creative person fueled by an energy that is natural. The force field he creates is formed by tendencies that are organic and humane. There is a lot going on in his mind, heart and soul but the purity of his efforts create an aura that can only come from a real artist - one that is purposeful, focused and moving toward the light. (Jack McCray, Jazz Writer for the Post & Courier)

Under the canopy of the Brazilian soundscape, Duda fell in love with melody, listening to his father’s guitar serenades coupled by his afternoons attending the rehearsals of the Pernambuco Symphonic Orchestra, his mother’s workplace. By the age of 12, songs were already filling Lucena’s head and heart. A composer was born.

Lucena studied classical guitar and received musical training from the distinguished Conservatorio Pernambucano de Musica. Moving musical landscapes, Lucena had the fortune to learn from the masters of harmony, arrangement and composition - Ian Guest, Nelson Faria and Adamo Prince - in Rio de Janeiro. From Lucena’s first concert at Museu da Cidade do Recife to Valdemar de Oliveira Theatre to Sala Baden Powell Theatre, a performer was born.

On tour in Mexico, Lucena’s wife recounts her “love at first ear” when happening upon Lucena’s song on the streets of Cabo San Lucas. The couple started their life and family in a city deeply rooted in Jazz, art and culture - Charleston, SC.

It is a perfect love affair - Lucena is captivated by the musical knowledge and talent in Charleston and as a pivotal force of Brazilian music, Lucena’s rhythms have charmed the South. And the Jazz Jam plays on.

Lucena has been featured on the XM Sirius’ Real Jazz Show, local NBC and CBS shows, as a featured guest with the Charleston Symphony and Jazz Orchestras, and performed nation-wide at the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts, Charlotte Jazz Festival and Jazz room, Savannah Jazz, Gibbes Museum of Art, Big Sur Spirit Garden (CA) and more. Lucena is composing like never before with new songs to catch and release for an upcoming Brazilian Serenades tour. Stay tuned
